An oral examination of 176 childhood leukemic patients receiving chemotherapy was
performed to evaluate the type and frequency of the oral findings of childhood leukemia.
And, Area of oral mucosal ulceration and platelet count of the patients manifesting
spontaneous bleeding and submucosal bleeding were evaluated.
The results were as follows :
1. Variable oral finding were observed, submucosal bleeding and oral mucosal ulcer
were the most frequent intraoral findings and cushingoid face was seen only in acute
Iymphogenous leukemia.
2. Oral mucosal ulcer was more common in non-keratinised epithelium than keratinized
epithelium.
3. Generaliz mucosal pallor was observed in patients who had homoglobin amount of
7.5gm% or less.
4. Patients who had spontaneous bleeding had platelet count less than
60.000/mm3.
5. Patients who had submucosal bleeding had variable platelet count and 56% of them
had platelet count of 60.000/mm3 or less.
